Fund for Improvement of Science & Technology Infrastructure in Universities and Higher Educational Institutions (FIST)

DNA sequencing facility started operation from 12.09.2001 at the School of Biotechnology, Madurai Kamaraj University.   The facility was instituted with funding from FIST programme of DST at a cost of Rs. 31.7 lakhs.  Since its inception, the DNA sequencing facility has offered services to researchers in the School of Biotechnology at Madurai Kamaraj University and also researchers outside.  Institutions such as Shanmugam Foundation, Madurai and Ophthalmic Research Laboratory Genetics and Immunology division of the Aravind Eye Hospitals, Madurai have used this facility.

Typical DNA sequencing run provides upto 600 bases in one strand.  Cost of one sequencing run is Rs. 1500/- with standard primers M13 forward, M13 reverse, T7, T3 and SP6.  For DNA sequencing with specific primer, the user must provide the same.  Sequencing can be done with templates such as double stranded plasmid DNA, single stranded DNA and PCR product.  We also could prepare template plasmid from E. coli for an additional charge of Rs 500/- per sample. In this case the sequence read is assured. For details please contact Dr. Ranjan Prasad at ranjan@mrna.tn.nic.in
